Step inside the doors of Huguenot House, and you’ll hear it before you see it — the rhythmic tap of a jeweller’s hammer, the soft whir of a polishing wheel, and the unmistakable calm of focus. This is where the artistry of jewellery manufacturing in Cape Town takes on a deeply human form. At Prins & Prins, each exquisite piece begins not on a conveyor belt, but at the hands of a master goldsmith — where legacy, precision, and heart meet in every design.
Morning Light and Molten Gold

Our day begins early. Our Master Goldsmith arrives before the boutique opens, greeted by the golden light that streams through the original sash windows of Huguenot House. His tools are laid out with almost meditative care: antique engraving styluses passed down through generations, loupe glasses, polishing cloths, and calipers — each essential to the creation process.
First, he examines the day’s designs. Today, it’s a custom engagement ring: a three-stone setting featuring a central natural diamond, flanked by two heirloom sapphires. Before even touching the metal, he studies the client’s sketches and notes from the consultation. “Every piece begins with a story,” he says. “I just translate it into gold.”
Mastery in Motion

As the workshop comes to life, he begins to melt the recycled 18ct gold. The alloy is poured into a cast to form the base band, which will soon cradle gemstones of rare beauty. Using traditional hand-forging techniques, he bends, shapes, and refines the piece — checking and double-checking with a critical eye only experience can hone.
While CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software is occasionally used by our design team for precision planning, it is the artisan’s hands that give each piece its soul. No mass production. No shortcuts. Just dedication to excellence.
Midday Focus: Crafting Something One-of-a-Kind

By lunchtime, the engagement ring has taken shape — but the details are just beginning. The claws are hand-filed. The seats for each gem are precisely angled. The symmetry is exacting. One wrong move, and weeks of planning could be undone.
He pauses only briefly — not for a break, but to examine a vintage piece a client brought in for redesign. “It’s always a privilege,” he says, turning the timeworn ring between his fingers, “to preserve the past while creating something new.”
The Final Touch: Finishing with Feeling

As the day winds down, the ring is polished until it gleams — not just with shine, but with meaning. He places it into a Prins & Prins signature box, where it will await its big moment: a proposal, a promise, a forever beginning.
Before he closes up, he enters a few notes into the atelier log — documenting every step, ensuring traceability and perfection. For our master goldsmiths, excellence isn’t just a goal. It’s a habit.
Why It Matters
In a world where speed and sameness dominate manufacturing, our workshop in Cape Town remains proudly different. Here, jewellery manufacturing is about people, craft, and connection. Each piece is a chapter of someone’s life — carefully sculpted by hands that care.
When you wear Prins & Prins jewellery, you carry more than beauty. You carry a legacy of craftsmanship rooted in one of Cape Town’s most historic buildings — and one of South Africa’s most trusted names in fine jewellery.
