Beyond the 4Cs: What GIA’s New “Premium” and “Standard” Labels Mean for Laboratory-Grown Diamonds

At Prins & Prins, we’ve always prided ourselves on guiding our customers through the sometimes confusing world of diamonds. As part of our commitment to transparency and quality, we specialize exclusively in natural certified diamonds and gemstones. Recently, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced a shift in how laboratory-grown diamonds will be graded, and while this change doesn’t affect our natural diamond offerings, it’s important to understand how it impacts the broader diamond industry.

Why the Change?

GIA’s new approach to laboratory-grown diamonds stems from the fact that over 95% of lab-grown diamonds fall within a narrow band of color and clarity, making the traditional 4Cs (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) less applicable to these diamonds. This update aims to provide consumers with clearer, more relevant information by introducing two new grading categories for lab-grown diamonds: “premium” and “standard.”

Tom Moses, Executive Vice President of GIA, explains: “Because more than 95% of laboratory-grown diamonds fall into a very narrow range of color and clarity, it is no longer relevant for GIA to describe them using the nomenclature created for the continuum of natural diamonds.” This change is expected to simplify and clarify the purchasing process for lab-grown diamond consumers.

What Does the New Grading System Mean?

Under the new system, laboratory-grown diamonds will be classified as either “premium” or “standard,” depending on their color, clarity, and finish:

  • Premium diamonds will have near-colorless hues (roughly G–H or better), eye-clean clarity (VS+), and a high-quality finish (very good to excellent).

  • Standard diamonds will have slight tints (I–K), minor inclusions visible under 10× magnification (SI), and a good finish.

Diamonds that do not meet the minimum standard will not receive a grading designation but will be labeled as lab-grown, with additional details like “significant inclusions” or “noticeable color tint” for full transparency.

What Does This Mean for You?

While the changes in GIA’s grading system for lab-grown diamonds won’t affect our natural diamond offerings, here’s what consumers should keep in mind when navigating this new terminology:

  • Easier Comparisons: Consumers purchasing lab-grown diamonds will now be able to focus on whether a stone is classified as “premium” or “standard,” simplifying the decision-making process.

  • Greater Transparency: The new system gives immediate clarity about what you’re buying, with a straightforward classification that replaces the complex 4Cs grading scale.

  • Clearer Distinction Between Lab-Grown and Natural Diamonds: While natural diamonds will still use the full 4Cs, lab-grown diamonds will have their own grading system, helping you make a more informed decision.

Choosing Between Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds

At Prins & Prins, we specialize only in natural diamonds, but for those considering lab-grown diamonds, here’s a quick comparison of key factors:

Factor Natural Diamond Laboratory-Grown Diamond
Geological Origin Formed deep within the Earth over billions of years Created in high-tech reactors in a matter of weeks
Grading Language Traditional 4Cs grading system GIA’s “Premium” / “Standard” descriptors
Rarity Naturally scarce, prices reflect rarity Readily available, offering great value
Environmental Impact Mining operations, though regulated, can have an environmental footprint Minimal environmental impact, produced in controlled settings
Emotional Value Often chosen for its geological rarity and symbolism Chosen for its ethical production and potential for larger size at a lower cost

Ultimately, the decision comes down to your personal preferences, priorities, and budget. Whether you choose a natural diamond for its rarity and timeless appeal or a lab-grown diamond for its ethical production and affordability, both options have their unique advantages.
