Wedding Rings in Cape Town: How to Choose Your Bands

October 27, 2026◆Written by Prins & Prins◆4 minutes read

You will wear your wedding ring more than any other piece of jewellery you own. It survives dishes, gym sessions, gardening and decades of daily wear. An engagement ring is chosen for a moment. A wedding band is chosen for a lifetime, and the practical questions matter more than the sparkle. This guide takes those questions in order for anyone choosing between the wedding rings Cape Town jewellers make: metal, width, diamonds, matching, timing and budget.

Choose the Metal First

The metal sets the tone and the maintenance. Platinum is dense, heavy and naturally white, and it wears by dulling to a soft patina rather than thinning. White gold is lighter, and stays white through rhodium plating that needs refreshing every few years. Yellow gold is the classic, and rose gold the romantic. There is no wrong answer, but there is a practical one: the band metal should match or suit the engagement ring it sits beside, because the two will rub against each other for decades. Our guide to platinum and gold wedding bands compares the metals, and our white gold vs platinum guide compares the two whites properly.

Width and Profile Decide Comfort

Width is measured in millimetres, and the difference between 2 mm and 6 mm is bigger than it sounds. Narrow bands feel lighter and suit slender hands. Wider bands feel more substantial and suit larger hands, but they also feel different when fingers swell in summer. Then there is profile: a comfort fit band is rounded on the inside, which makes it easier to push over the knuckle and noticeably more comfortable all day. A flat profile looks more architectural. Try both on before deciding, because comfort is decided in the first hour, not in the mirror.

Diamonds in the Band

A plain band is timeless and the easiest ring in the world to maintain. Diamonds in the band add brilliance but they also add decisions. A half eternity band has stones across the top, which keeps the underside plain, so the ring can still be resized later. A full eternity carries stones the whole way around, which looks beautiful from every angle but usually cannot be resized, because there is no bare metal to cut. If you love the full eternity look, be certain of the size before you commit. The sizing rules are in our ring resizing guide.

How Do You Choose a Wedding Band to Match an Engagement Ring?

Start with the engagement ring: choose a band in the same or a complementary metal, keep the width in proportion, and check that the two rings sit comfortably side by side. If the engagement ring’s setting sits low, a straight band may not sit flush against it, and a shaped band that curves around the setting is the usual answer. Bring the engagement ring to the consultation, because the match is judged on the hand, not on a screen. Our stylist’s guide to matching engagement rings and wedding bands goes further into the design choices.

His and Hers, and Matching

Matching bands are traditional, but matching does not mean identical. A common approach is the same metal and a shared detail, like a shared profile or a shared engraving, with different widths. Mixed metals work too: a platinum band beside a yellow gold one is a deliberate, modern pairing. The only rule that matters is that both rings look like they belong to the same couple when worn together. For classic, custom and contemporary styles, see our guide to wedding bands in Cape Town.

Custom Bands Are Easier Than You Think

A custom band starts with the engagement ring. Bring it to a consultation and the band can be shaped to sit flush against it, or to frame it, so the two rings read as one design. Engraving, mixed finishes, a hidden stone inside the band: these are all small details that a workshop jeweller adds easily. The process is the same as any bespoke piece, and you can see it all in our guide to custom made jewellery.

Time It Right

Off-the-shelf bands can be bought in an afternoon, if your size is in stock. Handmade wedding bands take longer, because they are made from scratch: at Prins & Prins, most commissions take around two to three weeks, depending on complexity and stone sourcing. So start well before the wedding, not two weeks before it, and leave time for a fitting. Engraving adds a little more time. And order ahead of the summer wedding season, when many couples are ordering at once.

Budget Realistically

Wedding bands usually cost less than engagement rings, but platinum and diamonds still add up, and there are two of them. A sensible budget is one that does not compete with the engagement ring purchase, because these rings often follow each other within months. Set the number, then let the jeweller show you what it buys in each metal, with and without stones. Browse the ring collection, or book a consultation to try widths and profiles on the hand they will live on.
