Custom Made Jewellery in Cape Town: The Bespoke Process
Every piece in a jeweller’s window started as a sketch on somebody’s desk. Custom made jewellery, or bespoke jewellery, is not a rarefied service for special clients. It is the normal way serious pieces get made, and at Prins & Prins the custom jewellery Cape Town clients commission is designed and made under one roof, inside Huguenot House, a Cape Dutch townhouse built in about 1752 on the corner of Loop and Hout Streets. The mystery is only in the process, so here is the process, step by step.
What Bespoke Jewellery Actually Means
Bespoke means the piece is designed and made for one person, from raw materials, in a workshop. It is the opposite of picking a finished ring from a tray. Between those two ends there is a middle ground: taking an existing design and changing the stone, the metal or the setting. Much custom work starts somewhere in that middle ground, with a design that already exists in some form, and becomes personal through the changes. The Bespoke Process, Step by Step
Consultation. You bring the idea, the occasion and the budget. The jeweller brings the materials and the honesty about what works. Loose stones are shown under proper light.
Design. Sketches come first, by hand. From there the piece is drawn digitally or carved in wax, depending on the design. You approve this before any metal is touched.
Model approval. For complex pieces you will see a wax model or a computer render of the exact proportions, and you can try the wax on your hand before committing. This is the step that is hardest to do at a distance.
Casting and fabrication. The piece is cast in the chosen metal, then the heavy work begins: filing, soldering, building the setting, hand-finishing every edge.
Setting. The stones are set by a setter, claws closed one at a time, under magnification.
Finishing. Polishing, plating where needed, and a final quality check before the piece is handed over at the fitting.
Our designers and goldsmiths run this sequence in house, and you see the sketch, the wax or the CAD render before any casting is committed.

How Long It Takes
A simple custom ring, from an existing design with modest changes, is the quickest to make. At Prins & Prins, most commissions take around two to three weeks, depending on complexity and stone sourcing. A fully original piece with detailed stone work can take longer, and engraving adds a little more time. The honest advice is to start early, because the work is done by hand and cannot be rushed without showing it. A jeweller who promises overnight bespoke is describing something else.
The Cost Is More Flexible Than People Assume
Custom is not automatically more expensive. You pay for the stone and the gold, exactly as you would in the shop, plus the workshop time. Because nothing is made until you approve it, you control the stone size, the metal weight and the detailing, which means you control the price. A custom piece need not cost more than a comparable ready made one, and custom work on a budget is entirely real. The other lever is the metal you already own. Old gold can be reused or traded in against the new piece, which is how remodelling keeps the cost down.
Remodelling Heirlooms
A piece you inherited but never wear is the best raw material a jeweller can ask for. The stones carry the history, the gold carries the value, and the design is the part you change. A dated ring becomes a pendant, an old brooch becomes earrings, and the original piece lives on in the new one. If you are weighing this up, our pre-owned jewellery guide explains how inherited pieces are valued, and when remodelling makes more sense than selling.
Why Choose a Bespoke Engagement Ring in Cape Town?
Because you can see the stone loose, try the wax model on your own hand and meet the people who will make the ring, all in one place. Because if the ring feels wrong at the final fitting, the person who made it is in the same building, not in a warehouse on another continent. Because when something needs attention years later, you know where the workshop is. These are the reasons to choose a local atelier for custom engagement rings in Cape Town, and they are the reasons in our guide to choosing a jeweller. For the ring itself, our guide to bespoke engagement rings in Cape Town covers the design questions.
