PlatAfrica Awards 2012 – Prins & Prins Diamonds Jewellery Design and Manufacture

PlatAfrica Awards 2012

Prins & Prins Diamonds is committed to designing and creating masterfully crafted diamond, tanzanite, and gemstone jewellery. Recognising how important it is to offer students and apprentices opportunities to gain invaluable first-hand experience in a working environment, we have been fortunate to work closely with the Mining Qualifications Authority for several years to support practical training in the jewellery industry.

PlatAfrica Awards 2012

A testament to the success of this collaboration has been the recognition received by students and goldsmiths working within the Prins & Prins workshop. We are proud of Tasliem Omardien, Lisa Loubser, Aimee Bredenkamp, and Stephani Botha, who were each awarded a Merit Award at the PlatAfrica Awards 2012.

Inspiration behind the collection

The inspiration behind the collection was the South African Afro-jazz singer-songwriter Lira.

Lira

The inspiration: “We chose this South African icon as our inspiration not only because of the music she creates, but also because Lira is involved in charitable and community initiatives, making her a strong role model to young South Africans.

The symbolism behind the circles represents how Lira is a well-rounded woman. We chose bold shapes to highlight the expressive nature of the metal while still capturing the beauty and femininity of the wearer. Inspired by the reference image above, we incorporated white leather elements. This complements the colour of the metal and provides contrast.”

PlatAfrica Merit Awards

The Merit Award was presented to the collection that “captures the essence of platinum” in the Student Collection Category of the 2012 PlatAfrica Jewellery Design and Manufacturing Competition. Lisa and Aimee’s Merit Awards were also extended to the Individual Student Category of the competition.

These achievements are particularly meaningful as entries were submitted from across South Africa, and the competition was open to students, apprentices, and professional jewellers working in the country.

We are proud to support developing talent within our in-house workshop and we wish each recipient continued success in the jewellery industry.
